I would never advise you to eat an agarose gel after electrophoresis, or a Petri dish with live microbes growing on it. Well, actually, don't eat any of them even before electrophoresis or before seeding any microorganisms! Unless...

Well, unless the agarose gels and the Petri dishes are beautiful, edible cookies made by Ms. Humble from Not So Humble Pie!
Yummy!
Can science be... delicious??

For a bite of extra realism, they should make the gels with only a ladder on the side (or smears, but those would be harder), and the petri dish should be devoid of any bacteria, and instead populated by a beautiful colourful pattern of fungi. Oh, and the REALLY pink yeast, Sporidiobolus salmonicolor -- my favourite contaminant!
ReplyDeleteAlthough something about putting anything electrophoresis gel-like in your mouth...eugh. Instinct would command me to get gloves before even touching those...
Hmmm, ideas for the winter break: learn how to make protist cookies... ^_^
Thanks for your comment, Psi Wavefunction. But I'm not sure if I would like the cookies to be more realistic... It might be too weird...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, you have a really nice blog out there! Skeptic Wonder: protists, memes and random musings -- great!
I have recently discovered Not So Humble Pie as well and LOVE her nerd cookies! I love that she is a scientist and so knows how to cater to us, lol!
ReplyDeleteYummmii!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. A perfect dessert for Xmas

Feliz año, salud y ...
ReplyDeleteDefinately agree with Psi there. Although for even more realism, they shuold show no pink bands at all, apart from the ladder...
ReplyDelete(It's great to find another bacteria-related blog...hope you keep writing!)
Thanks for your comment, Lab Rat. I'll write something soon...
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious! ;-)
